Trip Video: Yellowstone's Crescent Lake and High Lake

Here is my first attempt at a trip report video. Its from my 3 day backpack in the North West corner of Yellowstone National Park, along the Crescent Lake High Lake Trail. You can read that report here:

Disclaimer: I have no desire to be a professional. I have little interest in filming or editing. I'm simply trying to piece together video footage of my trip. This version is long. I'm not out to get YouTube hits or views. My target audience is people like myself who love backpacking , adventure, and it this instance, Yellowstone. I will edit this more after Thanksgiving, to work on details like sound, transitions, and steadiness. I will probably cut it down to under 10 minutes. Right now its at 18 minutes.

You forgot to mention at about the 7:50 mark of your video that the trail marker is edible!


I enjoyed your report. I still really like the footage of Specimen Creek flowing through the trees and snowy landscape. The sound of the water just adds to it.

When you crossed the creek on the log, was it slick? It looks kind of tricky.

I have no suggestions Joey and wouldn't change anything. I could watch videos like this all day long. Love the scene at the end at 18:00, really beautiful out there. Back to your video editing though, I like your style, it's informative enough but you let the scenery do most of the talking. I've seen videos on youtube where the person narrating suddenly becomes a forest ranger who aims to educate about every species of plant, flower, insect and needs to point out the name and elevation of every peak. Keep it minimalist like your doing. Great job, you have a good eye for piecing together the right shots.

What editing software are you using btw? I started using Cyberlink PowerDirector 12 and I like it. I've been working on a video from my Utah trip forever, hopefully I'll have time to finish it this holiday weekend.

Absolutely 100% in agreement with VeganHiker's comments---particularly about your video editing style. As I viewed your footage, I felt like I was the guy holding the camera and you were talking directly to me. Great job all around---beautiful footage and sufficiently informative narration. Nothing too forced or overdone. I like that you make every effort to let the viewer know where you are as you traverse your route. Beautiful scenery is nice, but tying it to "place" the way you've done it here adds so much more to the video's substance and the viewer's pleasure. Thanks for sharing this!

It was easy. I did slip slightly once, think I caught it on video. Kind of why I was laughing when I jumped off.

Thanks for the input @Vegan.Hiker. I'm using Adobe Premiere Elements 12, because my brother and sister recommended it. I'm not sure if I like it or not. I was looking at Cyberlink before I went with Adobe, and still wondering if I should use it. But to be fair, all I've done so far is clip videos together. LOL, that's all I know how to do. Trying now to figure out how to work on transitions and adjusting sound. I definitely need to fix those things on this video.
