Bag Night Challenge 2021

Four nights on the Green last week. Conditions were very muddy, especially in the upper half of Labyrinth. There's a massive new sand bar at the mouth of Horseshoe Canyon that wasn't there last year, and a fire at Bowknot Bend burned away some tamarisk which made reaching some mining ruins much easier. I didn't even bring a tent--luckily the weather forecast held and nights were perfect for a cot.

My plans to "step up my camping game" (mentioned in my July post) haven't really panned out, at least not in the way I expected it to. Spent many nights in the new RV over the last few months, but not as many as I'd like roughing it. I only got one night in October, last night at the Utah Launch Complex near Green River, Utah. And I didn't even sleep in a cot under the stars, just set up in the back of my Jeep and watched @Jammer's latest video and read a book before falling asleep.

I camped two nights last weekend in Utah's West Desert. Lately I've wanted to camp on a dry lake bed so I made it happen at Pahvant Dry Lake. This year will hopefully be the latest in only two years that I managed to camp at least once each month. Plans for the next two months include camping between the lanes of an interstate highway, and camping on a frozen lake.

Scary story to read this morning @IntrepidXJ , glad to hear your medical check up was good.

Done for November. Been doing 1 per week. A couple of favorites, one that was just convenient, and another in a particular area I hadn't seen in 18yrs.

Virgin Falls is always my #1 waterfall:

I hadn't visited Ranger Falls at Savage Gulf in a bit, though.

Cheaha is close, and I got to hike in the clouds.

I've been to Sipsey a couple of times this year, but trails I hadn't hiked since 2003 were "new" to me, and fun to explore.

Its was an okay year. Spring saw a couple stays on the Colorado Plateau. Summer in the northern Rockies and North Cascades. Autumn, the Great Basin and Mojave, as well as the Colorado Plateau again. Spent time with family and friends, and made some new ones on the trail. 90 days or so total in the tent or truck this year. Not everything got recorded, but here's a taste of what was.

December brought another trip to the Canyonlands Needles District(plus a quickie into Arches to visit Delicate Arch), and one through parts of the Middle Prong and Shining Rock Wilderness areas in NC's Pisgah NF with a good friend and his dog.
So 43 bag nights, unless I suddenly decide to head back to TN in the rain over the next couple days.

so, I've been holding off because I've gone back and forth on whether to add my bag nights or not. Most were car camping , but it appears that's fine and idk... its a thing that I can share. I'll be honest that I don't have a day by day itinerary for it all (was easier to calculate based on where I knew I wasn't in a bag) because it was all based around my summer job and subsequent lack of housing once school started up, but the total was

121 Days

basically from May to October I was living out of my car, working, or traveling. I know for 18 nights in may I was in the john day Oregon area. During my summer as a stream technician for the forest service I went to basically every forest from the Colville in Washington to as far east as the upper Missouri river basin to as far south as Kamiah ID. During the off time I went to the pacific northwest, the Magruder corridor, glacier, met some old family friends, sat at a great campsite for a whole week trying to get a place to live, and explored random forests in the area. September was just me spending all of my time going to school while living out of my car. Truly a strange year, so have some photos and enjoy this as you please. The photos are in no particular order.
