I am always looking for a good book! Please share your favorite books and maybe a description!!!
My favorites are
  • Monkey wrench Gang and Desert Solitaire (I try to read these two annually, usually early spring)
  • Lost City of Z (true story about one of the greatest amazonian explorers disappears on his last expedition)
  • Pride and Prejudice (the romantic in me?)
  • Cats Cradle (Kurt Vonnegut)
  • World War Z (Zombie apocalypse )
  • Catch 22 (the mental affects of war on soldiers)
  • Into the Wild
  • Man Eaters of Kamaon (true story about a hunter of man eating tigers)
  • Jubal Sacket and Last of the Breed (Louis L'amour favorites since I was a teenager)
 
my favorite Ed Abbey book is THE FOOLS PROGRESS

other favs include

Miracle in the Andes (the rugby team that survived 80 days)

Endurance (Shackleton voyage to the south pole)

Dark Tower series by Stephen King

Enchantment by Orson Scott Card
 
I'm with pinecone on this one -

Fools Progress is like a fine mixture of Ed Abbey and Charles Bukowski.

I'd have a hard time listing my favorite books - I read a lot and have a ton of favorites. I read a pretty wide variety of books - fiction and non. I'll have to just mention a top few.

To a God Unknown -John Steinbeck This book is amazing. Literally a life changing book for me.

Eating Stone - Ellen Meloy

Cadillac Desert - Marc Reisner - where did your water go/where did it come from? Now you know.

Losing the Garden - again, heartbreaking and beautiful.

Soul of Nowhere - Craig Childs

I also really liked fools progress, the long walk and endurance. I have wanted to read cadillac desert for a while, maybe that will be next. As for soul of nowhere is it about anasazi/ancestral puebloans? I read house of rain by childs and really liked it. Learned a lot as well. I am on goodreads also anderson@pvms.us
 
Outliers - Malcolm Gladwell (statistical advantages and how used them to become experts featuring data about Bill Gates, The Beatles and NHL hockey players)

Everything else I have read lately has been either a textbook or article for school. I will come back soon with more!
 
Long Walk was awesome read!

Water for Elephants

The Mockingjay series (might not be right title). My son made me read it. Loved it! Can't wait for the movie.

Hunger Games!!! that is the one with the Mocking Jay. Great series.

!!!!!!! I don't know that I would necessarily be a Lee man, Just a well written book that is in my opinion one of the "least" biased about the man. Grant had a beautiful strategic mind IMHO, I would be interested in reading your thesis.... Oh wow my history geek is showing.. umm backpacking ROAR!!!
 
Annals of a Former World by John McPhee ("Geologic poetry" as he travels across the US on I-80, describing the geology as he goes.)
A Story that Stands like a Dam by Russell Martin (about the construction of the Glen Canyon Dam and how it was almost lost in 1983)
Guns, Germs and Steel by Jared Diamond (about why the Europeans were able to conquer the world, mainly because of the shape of Europe.)
Collapse: How Societies Choose to Fail or Succeed by Jared Diamond (why some societies collapsed...fun insight into the inhabitants of Easter Island.)
The Making of the Atomic Bomb by Richard Rhodes (about, well, the making of the atomic bomb.)
The Elegant Universe by Brian Greene (string theory and multiple dimensions...damn near made my brain explode when I got to the Calabi-Yau manifolds.)
When the Smoke Cleared at Gettysburg by George Sheldon (what do you do with 5000 dead horses? Set 'em on fire.)

Newly completed and a new favorite -
For Whom the Bell Tolls - Hemingway. Fantastic, beautifully gut-wrenching.
