Mary Jane canyon is a small stream that joins the Colorado River 20 miles northeast of Moab. The creek flows year-round which is shallow for most of its length. One mile of the central section becomes fairly narrow and up to 100 feet deep. The walls have interesting rock textures and colors, different to most true slot canyons as the rock is darker, harder and less striated. The hike upstream is an easy walk, and very pleasant in summer as much of the journey involves paddling in the cool, shallow water. Along the edges of the creek, abundant green vegetation makes a nice contrast to the reddish canyon walls.
Directions: From road UT 128, which links Moab with Cisco, near I-70, and 3 miles northeast of the turn-off to Castle Valley, a good quality gravel track (Professor Valley Road) heads southeast for 2 miles, past a cluster of ranch buildings. From UT 128, right just after mile post 18, and turn right. You'll see a sign that reads "Ranch Road - Dead End". Follow this for about 1.5 miles, and at the first Y in the road, turn Right. You'll drive past a small dam on the right hand side. Keep going for another .25 miles and the road will end. This is were you'll park to start hiking.
Trail description: At the TH you'll see a sign for "Professor Creek/Slyvester Trail" - DO NOT follow this trail. I made this mistake on my first attempt at Mary Jane canyon. Professor Creek is a nice trail, but follows the rim for about 4miles one way, and does NOT lead to the slot canyon. Instead, look for the "no camping" sign in the parking area. Go down to the dry steam bed right by this sign, then right back up to the other side. Just on this other side you'll see the creek, and this is what you want to follow the whole way. After about 1/2 mile, you'll see a Y in the creek - take the Left where water is coming from. After about 30minutes from the TH, the canyon walls will start to get higher, and after halfway (about 2.3miles in) the walls get even higher and the canyon begins to narrow. Continue following the creek until you reach the end - a double tongued waterfall halted by a chokestone, about 30 ft high.
Trail tips: Wear shoes you can walk in for 9miles in and in water all day, bring plenty of water, and sunblock. Dogs are allowed on the trail, just bring your own dog poop bags.
My group of 10 arrived here in 2 hours 30 min.
