Uintas Highline Trail 2012

Have you looked on youtube there is a series from three guys who did it last year. Slightly funny but shows some good views along the way.

Nick,

I've got my eye on a variation of the highline trail. At the very least I could join your for parts of it. Although, 9 days is way too slow. I was thinking 5 nights.

And you need to get a tenkara fishing setup. My whole rig weighs 5 ounces. Seriously. 5 ounces, for everything, flies included.

Or better yet, get two weeks off and we can hike the CDT through the winds...

I'd be interested, Dan. Don't know anything about the CDT but I know I like the Winds a lot better than the Uintas. :) I'll have to look up some info on it. How long is it? I assume it runs the length of the Winds?

As for 9 days, that's just what I was going to take off work, basically one work week with a weekend on each side. Set my itinerary for 7 days but shoot for 5-6. I just wanted to have some wiggle room in there in case of problems or bad storms keeping me from crossing passes or something.

30 pounds is easily doable... You have a gear list on here anywhere? If I did it I'd carry my 0 series gitzo and a gh2 with 7-14 and 45-200 for lenses. With camera gear, tenkara, and 20 pounds of food (7-8 days), I come in right about 33 pounds.

I don't carry water up there, just use a steripen when I need a drink, or straight off the snow.

What time of year you thinking? I'd like to go earlier rather than later, but that's just me...

Good news about the highline, it's some of the easiest hiking around, it's cruiser up there. Make miles, make photos, and catch fish... :)

I was shooting to start on July 28th but I'm pretty flexible. I posted my comprehensive checklist here but that includes everything that I would ever take under every circumstance. It's more of a list that I go through and pick what I need and then pack with.

Seems like Cody and I have been throwing this around for years. It seems like every May I start looking at the calendar and I see my summer weekends just disappearing. I have got to do more backpacking this year...

Okay so this CDT sounds cool. But I just did a bit of googling and wonder how right this is. Doesn't sounds like 2 weeks, especially by Dan's standards.

CONTINENTAL DIVIDE TRAIL – WIND RIVER RANGE
Start: Green River Lakes Trailhead
End: Big Sandy Lake Trailhead
Length: 67 miles (a long week)

If it was me, I would go from Big Sandy to the Green River Lakes. The climb out of the Green River Lakes is killer, so much easier to go down. I had "heard" the mileage was around 50-55 miles? But I could be wrong. Well, I just mapped it out on Delorme and it says 65.15 so I'd guess your 67 is probably correct.

A shorter option could be to go in at Elkhart Park and out at the Green River Lakes (37 miles according to Delorme). My buddy did this route a few years ago and loved it. They took a week to do it and did a lot of site seeing along the way.

yeah, the actual CDT through the winds is actually very mellow, and avoids the business by staying west of the divide... I have a route I'm working on, trying to maximize the goodies by staying as close to the crest as possible. I'll post it soon.

Any time in the last half of July works for me. August, not so much.

I have drill July 14 and 15. I can't miss work the week of July 16-19.
But the week of 23-26 and that weekend 27-29 look reasonable...
Or the following week and weekend 30th - Aug 5th...
I have drill August 17-19.
