Your Most Important or Favorite Wilderness Skill

Don't think anybody has mentioned the ability to cover a lot a ground quickly. Especially solo, having confidence in my ability to hike out of bad situations or hike into better ones is very important to my backcountry enjoyment. I don't ususally hike fast and I'm not a fan of really long days. Being stuck on the trail with slow, out-of-shape hikers as it gets dark is frustrating and can be dangerous.

Trip planning. Learn how to read maps and where the route is, where bailout points are during the hike. Sometimes the fastest way out isn't the trail you're on.

Research the trail, topography, and weather conditions when you will be there.

If you plan right you should be able to get out even if you lose your map and some gear.
