That is odd. The road approaching that does not look passable on Google Earth, and topo maps don't show a spring at that location.
 
This is actually lava.
Itʻs called reticulite lava and is created during high-fountaining episodes with very frothy lava full of gas bubbles.
Therefore, this reticulite lava is lightweight and easily blown downwind.
It is extremely delicate and crumbles between your fingers, so you must pick it up carefully.
It has sort of a sponge-like appearance which is pretty cool.
I love finding this stuff on my hikes in the backcountry of Hawaiʻi Volcanoes NP.
