Bag Night Challenge 2012

I think it will be more fun to repost our totals as we add dates. Otherwise the thread will never get bumped. ;)

So here we go again...

Total 5

12/31/11 - 1/2/12 - Vermillion Cliffs, AZ-UT border - 3 days (one of which was in 2011)
1/13/12 - 1/14/12 - Canyonlands & Arches National Park - 2 days, cut short after getting carried off of the Delicate Arch Trail :mad:
3/10/12 - Coal Pits Wash, Zion National Park (backpacking)
3/23/12 - 3/25/12 - Capitol Reef and Sand Creek, Escalante

And I would just like to add that 4 out of 5 of my nights thus far have been without a tent! Under the stars baby! Woohoo!
 
Here's my updated total. I almost got out again this weekend, but stayed home due to heavy winds in the forecast. So far, it's been perfectly calm. :facepalm:

2/17/2012 - Garvin's Chimney near Old Woman Wash
3/9/2012 - San Rafael Reef south of Iron Wash
3/23/2012 - Garvin's Chimney near Old Woman Wash (this time with my kids)

It's on its way. Getting pretty damn gusty up here in slick city.

I didn't mean to exclude tent or shelter.. more to exclude hotels, motorhomes, trailers, cars.. Tents are ok, Yurts good.. cabins that you have to hike etc to get to good... neighbors abandoned house, not so good

maybe have multiple categories, with & without additional shelter than a bag?
there's something to be said for lighter packing & sleeping without being closed off from nature in a tent.
(maybe I am biased due to my primitive skills friends that go out with 4 lbs packs. ;) a goal i am personally seeking - well, maybe not THAT light, i like a few amenities.)

so, for 2012, so far I'm at one with tent, one with bag w/tarp windbreak.

3/29/12 - Steep Creek Bench w/tent
3/30/12 - Confluence of the Gulch & Egg Canyon tarp & bag only nestled under a nice Juniper in the duff.
 
3/22 and 3/23 island in the sky
3/30 kodachorme basin
3/31 white pocket

Total: 6
 
I'm in - but I'm going to suck compared to you guys. Now if we were talking days ski/boarding for 2011-2012 that might be different.

Here it goes:

March 16-17 Klondike camp out in tent.

I've only spent 2 nights under the stars in my life, lots and lots in a tent, used to camp almost every weekend April-November growing up in England. Spent 40 straight nights in a tent crossing the country (SF to Newfoundland) in 1997 but it was camping from a car. Haven't slept in a tent for a couple of years now but this year will be different.

Total: 10!! :)

Most of the time the wind was insane and on Wednesday night the storm almost killed my little solo backpacking tent, which can withstand gusts up to 45mph, but the worst ones I measured were 53mph :(
Now I need to send my little tent in because the storm ripped off a tiny part.
Beside that nasty weather it was a nice camping and hiking trip
 
I liked Randy's formatting so I changed mine up a bit.

Jan 13-14 | Island in The Sky | 1 Night
March 10-22 | Coal Pits Wash | 1 Night

And once again, I still have not used a tent this year since that New Years trip. Six out of seven nights sleeping directly under the stars! WoohoO! :)

So being the novice that I am, what type of tarp do you use? Do you get condensation on your bag?

I have an ultralight tarp that I picked up from REI a couple years ago. It's 8.5 x 9 feet and weighs 14 ounces. I can't seem to find a link to it anywhere now. It is made by a company called Outdoor Products. I don't have condensation issues much. It seems like it has to hit a sweet spot of humidity and cold for it to happen. In January on Island in The Sky, it dipped down to around zero so we put camp chairs laid down on their fronts over our faces but it never frosted. Out of the rest of the nights this year, I've only had a bit of frost on the bag one time which was in Coal Pits Wash.
